Small Wall:

Don Linke

First let me say that I had no premeditation nor preparation for when I suddenly had a compelling urge to visually portray what I was seeing in my head and I would be happy to explain that "vision" to anyone interested. It has only been with the passing of time that I've been able to reason out a possible explanation/interpretation.

All it takes to improvise a reasonably adept Jazz solo is a start. That is to say, if you understand to a relatively sophisticated degree the parameters of both your chosen instrument and a specific style of music, all that is needed is to begin. Once the initial phrase or (motive) is introduced there will be options that a true improvisor should be able to build on which will present new options etc until it ends. Hopefully at an appropriate length...

As to the displayed pieces, I feel there is a direct link to my nearly lifelong experience as a persevering Jazz student. In both the solo and the artwork one hears (sees) recurring motives, colors, dynamics and densities as well as serendipitous occurrences. These attributes are merely reordered to generate each separate result.

One final thought. In the Jazz world I create based on many different themes. In this new visual realm, I'm still working with my initial aforementioned "vision".
