About Us

We believe our community is strengthened by creativity.

In 1979, we came together as the Riverwest Artists Association to present the first ArtWalk. The artists that gave our neighborhood its distinct identity opened their studio doors and welcomed the public into our community.

Nearly thirty years later, we purchased the former home of the historic Milwaukee Jazz Gallery, a nationally-renowned jazz club and transformed it into a dedicated space for the community — a place to create, present, and experience the arts.

Today we’re the Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts, a home for emerging artists and musicians as well as those who’ve been around the block a few times. Here we celebrate experimental efforts along with more traditional takes, and everything in between.

We invite you to be part of our growing community. We’re actively working to expand our reach, increase diversity, and promote inclusivity, and there are many ways to get involved. Become a member, participate as an artist or musician, take in an exhibit or performance, or volunteer your time.

However you choose to take part, we welcome you!

Known throughout the music world, The Jazz Gallery was one of the nation’s premier jazz clubs from it’s opening in September 1978 until its close in late 1984. Owner Chuck LaPaglia produced spectacular concerts featuring a who’s who of artists, including: Dizzy Gillespie, Betty Carter, Freddy Hubbard, Stan Getz, Max Roach, Jimmy Smith, Sun Ra, Mose Allison, Wynton Marsalis, Brandford Marsalis, Dexter Gordon, Chet Baker, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and many more.

For more on the history of The Jazz Gallery, and a snapshot of a very particular era in jazz music, check out “Milwaukee Jazz Gallery,” a collection of reviews and articles compiled by Chuck LaPaglia and available for sale at the Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts.
