Exhibition Runtime: March 14th - June 4th

Opening Reception: Saturday, March 14th, 12-4 PM

This exhibit was created by the sophomore Photography/ Image Technology Class students at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts (Instructor, Carrie Hoelzer) in cooperation with Instructor Leah Good from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.

Students interviewed community members they had not met before the project as well as family members.

Project was funded by Future Designers Grant procured by M.I.A.D. and Forever Friends, LLC.

How did the idea for this show evolve?

I wanted to do some sort of intergenerational project with students in order to increase empathy and understanding of different groups of people within Milwaukee, especially of a different age bracket. I felt this was especially crucial since we are such a segregated city; this was my way of connecting various groups within our neighborhoods. I also was interested in having students participate in a graphic design task so they would have that experience, especially since we don't offer a distinct graphic design course at the school. Also, MPS has a literacy initiative designed to improve students' writing skills, so I was trying to incorporate this need as well. Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design joined the project as part of a Future Designers Grant to provide an instructor to work with the students on typography and layout, since that isn't my primary skill set.

What does this show tell you about residents of Milwaukee?

Milwaukee has a lot of diversity, especially in terms of newcomers to the area (refugees, undocumented individuals from Central America).

What does this show tell you about your students?

I believe they expanded their understanding of others from looking at one another's interviews

Were there any surprises in these pieces featuring Milwaukeeans?

I noticed that many of the students focused on family and community ties, and the opportunities available here.

Any surprises in your students' work?

I was happy to see that several of them really embraced using the layout software and designing the page spread; they definitely showed an interest and learning curve towards graphic design. I also discovered some students were very strong writers.

What would you like viewers of this exhibit to know?

That there are many motivated and talented students, and budding artists, within Milwaukee Public Schools that want to bring people together and make our city a better place. They were curious to learn about others' lives and backgrounds.
