About The Artist

Bruce Pattison (b. 1959, Milwaukee, Wisconsin) defies the labels that gallerists and critics have tried to place on his work. He has painted and drawn for decades.

As a young student he was inspired by images that he saw in Time Magazine of Jackson Pollock’s work. At Madison High School Pattison was fortunate to experience the teachings of Patricia Graham and the additional art exposure of the Art Satellite Program at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Pattison was especially moved by the work of Frida Kahlo when he visited her home in Mexico City.

These experiences confirmed his desire to make art. He studied studio art at UW Milwaukee in the 1980’s and 90’s and then exhibited in shows at St. Michael’s Waiting Room, Metropolitan Gallery, KM Art, Bay View Gallery and others

Artist Statement

“Isn't it fascinating that a few marks on a page can come to life or sit flat and dull? My paintings and drawings delve into fanciful realms, peopled by a plethora of characters and entertaining personalities.

At odds to their freewheeling appearance, my artistic aims are as sober and exacting as those of a mathematician or logician. Puzzles and visual motion are the foundation of my art inquiry. There are rules of engagement one must understand. Two-dimensional flatness and the contradictory logical nature of a spatial experience are made with marks on a flat surface.

This, for me, is a profound platform of discovery.”
