Pilgrims Crossing by Ian Izard
Ian Izard is a Milwaukee-based mixed media artist who focuses on the hypertextual-relationship between illustration and the written word. Combining bookmaking, oil, plaster, acrylic, wood, and a variety of other mediums, Izard’s works sit between abstraction and surrealism as they weave a web of stories about technology, media, desire, dread, race, and spirituality— invoking a tension between uncertain pasts and undetermined futures, reminding us of the alien societies within our own heritage, and interrogating how “normal” can take many forms across time and space.
This suite of paintings titled Pilgrim’s Crossing (though each panel has its own title) was created as a companion to the poem, “Another Lonely Pilgrim,” the musings of a pilgrim after they discover they weren’t alone in their sacred garden. Over four parts, they alchemize a potential solution for the miasma surrounding them.
As we go through the dark months ahead, and the enclosures around us tighten, this waystation waits for those walking the pilgrim’s way. It’s a place to double check your tools and charts, and a place to grab a light to make the road forward easier, because the world makes pilgrims of us all.
