Art on the Edge: Fear and Censorship in an era of political turmoil
One of the important roles of an artist is to respond to the issues of the day - to creatively challenge viewers to reflect on complex contemporary issues. In recent months, a number of Milwaukee artists have felt the chill of censorship and possible recrimination for their art. In some cases, planned exhibitions were canceled. In others, artwork was taken down or the exhibition was closed prematurely.
Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts, a long-standing community arts organization based in the Riverwest neighborhood, is responding to these issues with a group exhibition Oct. 12-Nov. 23. “Art on the Edge: Fear and Censorship in an era of political turmoil.” The goal is not to create problems for organizations or individuals, but to exploree how censorship and feears of political controversy have been impacting Milwaukee artists and art audiences recently.
Presented by Milwaukee River Advocates as part of the Milwaukee River Greenway 15 celebration
