In the second episode of Remote Resonance, John Larkin of local experimental psych-folk project Cairns joins host Eli Smith on-air for an interview and performance. The two discuss Larkin’s influences, the intuitive process by which his musical ideas materialize, and his shifting interest from relatively conventional songwriting to more abstract, experimental music-making. The first set of Larkin’s on-air performance is comprised of acoustic versions of songs from the forthcoming Cairns EP (due out in mid-2020), while the second set sees Larkin charting more experimental territory, intermittently building and dissolving a shifting current of samples, glitch-y electronic beats, and organ/synth sounds.
Each episode features musician’s performances and interviews. Styles vary widely, from experimental and improvised music, to hip-hop, to jazz and more. Remote Resonance is a production of Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts in conjunction with Riverwest Radio, and is an effort by the venue to continue its programming in the wake of COVID-19 forcing the venue to temporarily close.
