In 2018, vocalist Janna Lee declared the snake her spirit animal, and formed Snek Trio with Reid Karris and Erik Sowa. What started as free improvised jams evolved into loosely structured songs. Waltzing back and forth between melody and chaos, Janna’s unrestrained vocals duel with the dissonant yet ethereal textures of Reid Karris’s prepared guitar. Drummer Erik Sowa keeps them both in line with his danceable grooves, and is the element that makes their sound accessible but still experimental and eclectic. Chicago label Lurker Bias released two of their albums: Battement Développé in 2019 and Everything is Fine Until it isn’t in 2023.
