Artists in this thought provoking exhibit examine how monsters (personal and collective) reflect fears, fascinations and boundaries of identity. Heather Charley is a Chicago-based teaching artist with close ties to Wisconsin. This includes a 53-day stay at Froedtert Hospital in 2024, initiated by her leg’s attempt to secede from her body, and extended by a full system shutdown. This past January, she did 30 small works around that trauma and found healing as she abstracted away from specifics. Mismanaged Utopias is a continued mutation and propagation--generating new, but flawed, speculative worlds informed by the complex and mysterious organic systems of the human body and nature.
