Artists Statement: Michael Lutz

My art is primarily sculptural. Even in making utilitarian objects or paintings, I think of the work as sculpture. Wood and steel are the main materials in most of my work, but it can include virtually anything.

Time, place, culture, science, and beauty are themes my work explores. The majority of the works in this exhibit are collaborations with nature. Rather than bend materials to a desired outcome, I bend my manipulations to materials I find desirable. I think of these pieces as visual haiku.
