Roy Haynes Tribute Concert
Saturday, March 15th @7:00
At the Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts - 926 East Center Street
Jazz drummers get no respect.
Ask a jazz fan to name some of the all-time greats of the genre and they may rattle off names like Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Cannonball Adderly or Herbie Hancock. What you probably won’t hear is the name “Roy Haynes,” and that would be a shame because the man was truly a jazz giant.
On Saturday, March 15 the Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts in Riverwest will give Roy Haynes some of the recognition he so richly deserves with a tribute concert honoring the career of the drummer who died last November at the age of 99.
Born in Boston on March 13, 1925 (and YES, we’ll also be celebrating what would have been his 100th birthday!), Roy Haynes’ career spanned an incredible 7+ decades and included playing with such jazz luminaries as Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughn, John Coltrane, Chick Corea, and Pat Metheny.
The Jazz Gallery’s March 15 tribute concert will feature Victor Campbell and Jazz Flux & Friends. Featured special guests will include Jamill Shaw on tenor sax, Jesse Catalino Montijo on alto sax, John Zaffiro on guitar, Aden Stier on bass, and Ken Koust on piano.
